At every board meeting during the school year, Mesa Public Schools will recognize a Spotlight School. The Spotlight School at the January 28 meeting was Pomeroy Elementary. Below are principal Jennifer Field remarks on each honoree.
CERTIFIED STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Mario Valle
It is my privilege to shine a spotlight on someone who truly embodies the spirit of Pomeroy: Mario Valle. His dedication and unwavering support make him a cornerstone of our school community.
Mario is always willing to lend a hand wherever it's needed. Whether it's supporting our students in the cafeteria during lunch, helping to set up and break down tables, or watching over our students in the morning before school starts, he’s always there. He also plays a vital role in translating conversations, ensuring that our diverse community feels heard and understood.
Beyond his daily contributions, Mario is a driving force behind our afterschool sports program. He doesn’t just organize the logistics—he finds coaches, schedules games with other schools, and ensures that students have sports options throughout the year, from volleyball to flag football to basketball, just to name a few. Mario also keeps Pomeroy traditions alive, coordinating events like the Walk/Bike to School day, our Turkey Trot and Reindeer Runs, our Bike rodeo and annual Halloween parade.
But perhaps most importantly, Mario is an incredible mentor to our students. He takes the time to check in with them, set personal goals, and celebrate their successes. His impact extends far beyond the tasks he accomplishes—he truly helps shape the lives of the students he mentors.
We are thankful to have Mario as part of the Pomeroy family.
CLASSIFIED STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Karen Fleming
I have the honor of recognizing someone who makes a difference every single day at Pomeroy—Karen Fleming.
Karen is the kind of person who goes above and beyond without hesitation. Whether the task is big or small, Karen approaches everything with a heart of gold and a readiness to help. Her unwavering support for everyone is just one of the many reasons she is such a treasured member of our Pomeroy family.
Karen’s dependability is unmatched. If you need something, she not only knows where to find it but will also go the extra mile to make sure it’s just right. Her impact is felt in countless ways—preparing materials, laminating, scheduling events, and supporting WIN Time. And while she works tirelessly behind the scenes, Karen also shines in more visible roles, like helping in the media center, assisting during recess, working in small groups with students, and volunteering at the book fair.
What truly sets Karen apart is her ability to create a positive, stress-free atmosphere at Pomeroy. Whether she’s mentoring a student, checking in with a staff member, or simply asking how someone’s day is going, Karen’s warmth and kindness make all the difference. She lightens the load for everyone and brings an energy that makes Pomeroy a better place.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Bernie Romero-Ramos
I’m excited to honor a student who has made a lasting impact at Pomeroy, both in the classroom and beyond—Bernie Romero-Ramos.
Bernie has grown as both a student and an individual, exemplifying dedication and accountability. He approaches learning with enthusiasm, especially in math, where his love for math facts is top tier. Bernie tackles complex problems with confidence and creativity, inspiring his peers and standing out as a classroom leader.
Beyond academics, Bernie is a kind and supportive friend who fosters a collaborative, positive environment. While he may seem quiet and observant at first, once you get to know him, his playful side emerges. Whether singing made-up songs or dancing, Bernie brings joy and energy wherever he goes. His positive influence is truly contagious.
Bernie’s dedication to his work is remarkable. He beams with pride when acing math quizzes, never gives up, and crafts uniquely creative fantasy stories. His responsibility and strong character are evident in everything he does.
Students often praise Bernie for his kindness and friendship. His enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment make him a standout student, and we are so proud of his growth. We can’t wait to see all he continues to accomplish!
